PED 2014/68/EU Application

Streamline Your PED Compliance

The Pressure Equipment Directive (PED) 2014/68/EU is a cornerstone of European legislation, establishing essential safety requirements for the design and fabrication of pressure equipment. A critical first step in the compliance process is to correctly classify the equipment into a safety category. This category dictates the mandatory conformity assessment procedures required before the equipment can be placed on the European market.

This powerful app is specifically designed to simplify and accelerate the classification of piping. By providing a few key parameters, you can instantly determine the correct PED category and visualize where your equipment falls on the official classification charts.

More Than Just a Category Assessment App for Piping

This app provides a comprehensive assessment package:

  • Instant Category Calculation: Get the precise PED category for your piping—whether it falls under SEP (Sound Engineering Practice) or requires classification as Category I, II, or III.
  • Interactive Visual Confirmation: An interactive, logarithmic chart is dynamically generated, plotting your design point (Pressure vs. Diameter) directly onto the relevant PED Annex II diagram. This provides immediate, unambiguous visual validation of the result.
  • Seamless Unit Conversion: Effortlessly switch between Metric (bar, DN) and Imperial (psig, NPS) units at any time. All inputs, outputs, and chart axes update automatically, eliminating manual conversion errors.
  • Professional PDF Reports: With a single click, generate a clean, printable PDF report of your assessment. The report includes all input data, the resulting category, and a high-quality image of the chart, perfect for project documentation, quality assurance records, or technical files.

How to Use the PED App?

To determine the PED category for your piping, simply provide the following four inputs based on your design specifications:

Key Inputs

  • Design Pressure (PS): Required. Enter the maximum pressure the equipment is designed to withstand. The app accepts values in both bar (Metric) and psig (Imperial).
  • Nominal Pipe Size (DN/NPS): Required. Select the nominal diameter of the piping from a dropdown list containing standard DN (metric) or NPS (imperial) values.
  • Fluid Group: Required. Select the fluid group according to PED. This is critical as it reflects the hazard level of the fluid.
    • Group 1 (Hazardous): Comprises substances and mixtures defined as hazardous, such as explosive, flammable, pyrophoric, unstable, or toxic fluids.
    • Group 2 (Non-Hazardous): Includes all other fluids not classified under Group 1. Common examples are water, steam, nitrogen, and other non-hazardous substances.
  • State: Required. The state of the fluid under operating conditions.
    • Gas: Includes gases, liquefied gases, gases dissolved under pressure, vapours, and even liquids whose vapour pressure at the maximum allowable temperature is greater than 0.5 bar above normal atmospheric pressure (1013 mbar).
    • Liquid: Includes all other liquids not defined as a gas.

Reviewing the Results

After clicking "Show data", the results are displayed instantly:

  • The calculated PED category is clearly stated at the top of the output section.
  • The interactive chart below provides a visual representation. The colored regions correspond to the different PED categories, and your specific design point is highlighted with a distinct red circle, showing you exactly which region it falls into.
